Overview

The 2012 Sports Analytics Conference - Wednesday 14th November, Manchester Business School.

The UK's Sports Analytics conference provides a unique opportunity for sports professionals to gain a thorough understanding of this groundbreaking discipline, which is having an increasingly powerful influence in all areas of high performance sport.

Conference delegates hear from an excellent range of speakers and presenters, all of whom operate at the cutting edge of the industry.

The peer-to-peer event was successfully staged for the first time in November 2011 and offered an unrivalled learning forum, which created new momentum in British sport as it demonstrated the power and capability of Sports Analytics.

The inaugural conference brought together attendees from the UK and Europe. Delegates included leading academics, representatives of professional clubs and sports governing bodies.

The quality of the presentations and the networking that began at the conference were a genuine springboard for critical thinking and innovation.

The overall aim of the Sport's Analytics conference is to raise greater awareness of analytics in Europe and the UK and give sports proffesionals an opportunity to understand the tremendous value of the discipline to their organisations.

This year's event will take place on Wednesday 14th November 2012 and detailed plans are currently being formulated. Organisers are working to ensure the speaking line-up will once again include experts in all aspects of the field, as well as high profile coaches, managers and consultants from professional sport and international business.

Among the subject areas covered during the inaugural conference were statistical performance analysis and evidence based coaching, predictive modelling and the implementation of information management systems within a sports business.

The event also featured a Q+A session with experts operating in major Leagues and competitions around the world and this approach is set to be replicated at future conferences.

Anybody attending the 2012 event from any sector of professional sport will learn how the use of sports analytics can lead to a proper understanding of which factors affect winning and losing.

They will also learn how analytics is fundamental for sports organisations seeking to optimize preparation for individual players and teams on weekly, monthly and seasonal cycles. They will understand how analytics is critical for coaches seeking to develop successful tactics and game plans and how it is vital for organisations who need to maximise their recruitment and retention activity and run a successful sports business.

The principles of analytics are accepted in many major industries such as banking, manufacturing, retail and finance and these same principles can and should apply in sport. The discipline is so well recognised in the United States that it was the inspiration behind a best selling book.

'Moneyball' by Michael Lewis chronicles the success of Oakland A's General Manager Billy Beane as he used analytics to defy his Major League Baseball club's small recruitment budget and assemble a squad which went on to exceed all expectations and record a significant number of wins.  'Moneyball' was made into a film starring Hollywood actor Brad Pitt which hit cinema screens around the world in the Autumn of 2011.

The UK's Sports Analytics Conference was created by The Sports Office, a consultancy which provides online information and performance management tools used by leading clubs.
